Heroes Without Capes

Supergirl, Batman, Superman, Dr. Strange, Batwoman, Thor and other superheroes are so damn cool and heroic with their beautifully designed capes. They live to serve and protect. Their goal is to help others. They always put others before themselves. But do you know who the real heroes in our lives are? Doctors, teachers, food delivery and other front-line workers. These people do not just exist in comics and movies for the sake of our entertainment, but they are here to help us and better our lives.
Doctors who either work in clinics or hospitals or doctors without borders, they are lifesavers. They heal us and keep us alive. Physicians go through years and years of schooling and training to help others. They take an oath to do no harm and they live by it. And now they are even risking their lives for others. They put themselves in harm’s way and in danger of getting COVID 19 in order to help others survive it. As someone who is hoping to become a doctor and practice medicine, I look up to all these heroic doctors and I appreciate their sacrifice. And we can not talk about doctors without mentioning nurses and all the other hardworking medical workers.
Teachers share all their knowledge with us and they prepare us for the real world. They help support the future generation. But these last couple of years has not been easy for them. You try teaching through a computer screen; it is already hard enough to keep students’ attention in person. And now they are showing up to schools to teach with a mask on and without a frown. Remote learning or blended learning each and every teacher shows up day after day for their kids. We owe all the teachers in this world an apple and a whole bunch of gratitude.
Now, who here orders food? Who here uses GrubHub, postmates, or uber eats? I know I do. These deliverers make lives for us so easy. They get our orders when we are too busy, short in time, or simply just tired or lazy. They make getting food for us so convenient. In order to get us our food, they put themselves in danger by going into crowded restaurants during these uncertain times. And while doing all this, they make sure to get us our food on time and in good condition. Deliverers not only merit a generous tip, but they also deserve our appreciation.
Watching Batman beat The Joker or Superman beat Lex Luthor or Superwoman overcome kryptonite is amazing. But these powerful well-written heroes can not compete with our real-life heroes. Doctors, teachers, deliverers, and all the other kinds of hardworking front-line workers, I thank you all for your help and service. You guys are the heroes in my story and you guys truly deserve your own capes. Remember, you guys are appreciated. You guys are the HEROES WITHOUT CAPES.
